Interview

Tell us about your book?

What is the PRIMARY benefit, above all others, that your potential reader will gain from reading this book? (Be very specific. Please do not answer with 'good read' or 'page turner' or some other worn-out, overused phrase. Be concise and avoid generalization.)

I have always had a passion for backstories of characters, especially villain backstories. In books, tv shows, and films, those were always some of my favorite parts of the overall narrative. And the books, specifically Before the Emerald Crown, tell the story of the villain’s viewpoint and take the reader on a journey until they reach the point where they say “Oh my, I would have done all this, too! I would have been the villain!”

If you had to compare this book to any other book out there, which book would it be?

(Remember: The audience does not yet know you. It is very important that you reference something they might be familiar with to effectively and powerfully communicate what your work is about. You are NOT saying you are 'better than' or 'just like' this comparative, but are somewhat the same in a very general sense, to give the listener a point of reference.)

Fans of Melanie Karsak’s fairy tale retellings, like Spindles and Thorns, Laura Burton’s Under the Sea, and the Disney Twisted tales series will love this story.

Hundreds of thousands of books come out every year. Why should someone buy THIS book? (What is it that sets THIS book apart from ALL those other books in the same genre or category? What will the buyer get from you and ONLY you that simply cannot be found elsewhere?)

In this story, not only do we have a villain backstory, we have one that hasn’t been told before – the book focuses on the witch in the woods character (which is also one of my fave character tropes) from the Disney Brave film. We haven’t had her backstory yet, and since watching the film, I wondered, what would make her craft such a twisted curse? So I wrote that story.

Who is your target audience? (Be very specific. Gender? Age range? Geographic area? Primary interests? What benefits does the reader hope to gain from buying a book like this book?)

Since the book is low steam, it is appropriate for young adults as well as older readers. Most of the interest in the books has come from gen z and late millennial readers, mostly women who love fantasy and romantasy books. Before the Emerald Crown has elements of both, and is a little dark, so readers who enjoy those elements love the book.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage?

The book focuses on the witch in the woods character, and I feel like that character a lot – the odd older woman who hides in her house – so I feel that might have played a part. Outside of that, I pulled on history, folklore, and fantasy elements to bring this book together.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since publishing your work?

Fans who love my book boxes. Right now I am all sold out and waiting on book delivery because of how popular these book boxes are! I have a Before the Emerald Crown book box and a fairy tale book box with my other three fairy tales, and people love them, the books, the art, the story, the villainous themes that run through everything. I love how people love the books.

How would you describe your writing style?

I was heavily influenced by the Bronte sisters and the Outlander book series back in the 1990s. So I write a mix of causal and dynamic, thich with emotion, and detailed dark scenes, especially death scenes. Since I usually write romance, probably not the best . . . lol

Are your characters pure fiction, or did you draw from people you know?

A mix of both. My primary characters are fictional, but I include secondary characters pulled from people I know and use real historical figures in the setting as well.

Are you more of a character artist or a plot-driven writer?

Yikes! I’m not sure and it depends on the book. I think more character driven overall, and definitely for Before the Emerald Crown, as there is a lot of self-doubt and introspection. I see the book as a vehicle, and the characters drive that car. But sometimes cars go off-roading, and that’s when the plot takes over.

What do you hope to accomplish with your book other than selling it?

I have a lot more books planned in the series, ones outside of the typical Disney fairy tale genre, so I’d like use this book as way so see what else I will be doing with these books. Even though it is from a Disney film, it does not have the iconic nature of some of these other Disney villains, and so I used it as a transition to other fairy tale stories

Spin-off of the Father of Contention series

Paranormal Thriller, Science Fiction, Horror

Date Published: 11-14-2023

Freedom is a state of mind.

Brigita Nowak has only ever wanted one thing—her freedom. Labelled psychotic and committed to a mental institution at seventeen, she missed the chance of a “normal” life. She never held a job, owned her own place, or experienced love. Until now.

After awakening sprawled on the common room floor—the hospital in ruins, the staff and patients missing—she realizes it’s her chance to escape. Seeking sanctuary with her sister, she meets “the boyfriend” Renner Scholz, a vile yet brilliant geneticist. He has developed a bioweapon, the Code of Reanimation, destined to destroy the world. Or so Brigita believes. She’s been seeing zombie hallucinations as of late, a sure premonition of the highly contagious bioweapon getting out of hand. Why the connection? Because the bioweapon reanimates dead organisms into bloodthirsty killing machines.

Brigita has typically experienced death-based hallucinations, blamed on her mental illness. She, however, always felt they were psychic premonitions. Convinced that Renner intends to release the bioweapon at a public fundraising event, she teams up with a handsome love interest to thwart the catastrophe. But, as Brigita’s visions kick into hyperdrive and timelines blur, she must determine which events are based on reality or delusional constructs of her subconscious mind...

before it’s too late.

Blog Tour: Crimeline Hollywood by Thomas Collins #blogtour #interview #thriller #humor #rabtbooktours @CrimelineThomas @RABTBookTours

Comic Mystery / Thriller / Humor

Date Published: December 28, 2023

Publisher: Mindstir Media

Whoever thought an astrologer's life could be so dangerous? Especially when you're "Hollywood's Astrologer to the Stars." Yet he once crawled out on a 20-story beam to talk down a suicidal celebrity. And when he gave a Vegas casino owner a costly piece of advice, he found himself the target of a hitman.

Fortunately he escaped only to face another crisis: the kidnapping of Sparklynn James, his most famous client. After the Feds falter on the case, the family asks him to assist Rebecca Fairway, a publicity-seeking P.I. (a.k.a. "The Glamorous Gumshoe) to find her. Not exactly the A Team.

But a coded ransom message from Sparklynn herself points them in the right direction...leading them straight into a web of corporate evil.

Interview

Introduction   My Background

I grew up in Central Florida in the years before Mickey Mouse and The Magic Kingdom arrived. I graduated from Wake Forest then went onto the University of Missouri's School of Journalism to earn my M.A. with idea I would became an "ad man." However, by then I graduated there were no ad jobs to be found so I turned to public relations.

In the early 1970s I served as Manager of Public Affairs for Winston-Salem's Chamber of Commerce. There I had my own weekly radio show plus regular appearances on the local Morning Show. I also wrote and produced a 30-minute documentary on the city's recent re-development efforts called "Same Town New City" and created an anti-shoplifting campaign.

Later in my career I became Director of Corporate Communications for Blue Bell, a Fortune 500 company which makes Wrangler Jeans. During my 11-year run there I took the world's largest pair of jeans (four stories high) to the steps of the Capitol in Washington to lobby for the jobs of American textile workers. The jeans were signed by workers from 80 plants around the country and appeared in newspaper photos around the country. At Wrangler I also edited the corporate magazine and won more than two dozens profession awards for my work there including "Business Communicator of the Year" for the Southeast district of the U.S.

My Journey as a Writer

The first book I wrote was a mystery and the plot centered around the dramatic breakthrough in the development of an electric car. The man who designed it was kidnapped while on vacation in New England. The car would be fast enough to be entered in The Indianapolis 500. (This was written in the late 1980s and all of this became true, except that an electric car was not allowed to enter the race because it was not gas-powered.) The book was not published. I sent it to a former book editor for a major publisher for a critique. She tore it apart for my cardboard characters and flat style of writing.

I took this very seriously and worked hard to correct these faults when I wrote Crimeline Hollywood. I gave special attention to the characters, making them more colorful and quirky.  It worked. When I sent this book in for a professional critique, I got a different kind of response.

It was extremely positive and told it was one of the best manuscripts she had seen. Armed with this positive reception , I sent it to many agents who prompted returned it with a standard reply that pretty much indicated it had not been read. That's why, after a few more years I gave it some more polish and contacted MindStir. The reader there also gave it a very positive evaluation.

Why the turnaround? Besides the attention to character, I changed from a traditional narrative style to a more free-wheeling one, which I thought to be more entertaining and reader friendly. I was heavily influenced by author and screenwriter William Goldman.

My Book

Crimeline Hollywood is a fresh take on the classic mystery. The book's cover describes it as "A madcap mystery with wide-screen suspense." This is the story of Dash Harwood Harwood, "Hollywood's Astrologer to the Stars" who teams up with celebrity detective Rebecca Fairway to so solve the kidnapping of super star Sparklynn James, Dash's most famous client, after the FBI fails to make any progress in the case. Rebecca and Dash catch a big break when Sparklynn sends a coded message hidden inside one of the ransom messages. Starting with Gloryview, a fancy health resort, Dash and Rebecca (a.k.a. "The Gorgeous Gumshoe") follow a trail that sends them into a web of corporate evil.

Crimeline Hollywood literally starts at 90 miles hour as Dash floors the accelerator on his mother's ancient LincolnTown Car to elude a hit man sent by a vengeful Vegas casino owner. For his own safety, Dash decides to lay low miles far from Hollywood in a folksy little mountain town in North Carolina where he falls in love with the beautiful Ruthann. Just as the romance heats up, Sparklynn is kidnapped and Dash is called away to help find Sparklynn. Thus the book is not only a mad cap mystery with sizzling suspense, it's also includes a heartbreaking romance. A little something for every reader.

Message For Readers

If you're a mystery lover, you'll enjoy this fresh take on the classic mystery. It's a story with wide-screen suspense, lurid tabloid headlines, and a heavy helping of humor.

About the Author

(Now out of print) As an adult he gained valuable knowledge of the inner workings of big business as corporate communications director for a Fortune 500 company. Like his hero, Dash Harwood, he is an Aquarian who likes to think outside the box… once he cuts through all the packaging.

INTERVIEW

Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do.

Short version: Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim earned her Doctorate in Optometry, a Master of Science in Microbiology, and a Master of Arts in Psychology. She is the mother of two grown-up children, a wife, a semi-retired optometrist, and a multi-award-winning author. The genres of her books include romantic fiction, short stories, memoirs, self-help, and educational nonfiction.

Chang-Lim’s books depict the intricacies of human relationships and the striving of the human spirit. Ultimately, they evolve into inspirational tales that readers will find multidimensional and thought-provoking.

When asked about her motivation to be a writer, she replied, “Every human being is valuable; every soul is unique and special. I write with my heart and soul. My mindset is that if my writing can make a difference in even one person’s life, it’s all worth it, and that’s what love is all about.”

Currently, she is collaborating with an international psychologist and educator, Dr. Lora Erickson, to write a three-book series, Talking about Adolescence.

Book 1: Anxiety, Depression, and Adolescent Mental Health is coming soon.

Besides writing, Eichin is also passionate about acting, photography, music, and dance acrobatics. She and her husband live in Orange County, California, with their poodle mix named Gabby.

Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes.

From her earliest years, Eichin was drawn to the captivating biographies of famous historical figures who had overcome arduous trials through the rich saga of their narratives, each thread woven with resilience and triumph. She also enjoyed reflecting on quotes that challenged her thinking and sparked her imagination, igniting her curiosity and providing intellectual stimulation.

Even in her formative years, when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she answered without hesitation: a writer. She wrote short stories and essays for youth publications and was thrilled when they got published during elementary school. That fueled her writer’s dream. But then, everything changed. In junior high, her confidence was shattered when all her submissions were rejected. Concurrently, her fascination with science emerged, guiding her toward academic exploration in the science and health fields.

Years later, as a practicing optometrist, Eichin realized that every patient had a unique story to tell. Their eyes were windows into their souls, reflecting their experiences and emotions. This awakening rekindled her latent passion for storytelling.

To Eichin, the mantle of an author transcends mere words on a page; it embodies a profound commitment to purposeful storytelling. “Writing is an art of meaningful sharing—of the writer’s thoughts, heart, and soul—with readers. It is also an exercise in attentive observation, a journey of curiosity and intensity,” she once articulated. With this unwavering philosophy, she embarks on a literary voyage, crafting tales that resonate with the essence of humanity.
