Interview

1. Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?

I didn’t set out to place a specific message in the story. I’ve always loved escape fiction that takes the reader away from the troubles of real life for a while. That’s why I write fast-paced, young adult suspenseful adventures. An Amazon review by Alisa H described Boston’s Quest, “The rest of the book is really intense – the best way I can describe it without giving spoilers is it’s like Ender’s Game meets Hunger Games.”

So I was surprised and delighted when another Amazon reviewer, Linda D West, wrote, “The 2nd book (Boston’s Quest) I LEARNED from. Shanae imparts true words of insight and wisdom through her characters. They are totally believable saying and doing what I think those characters in real life would say and do. I relate to them and what they are going through! For the first time in my life, I feel sympathy for my own sons hooked on gaming and what I may even have unwittingly done to enable them. I even recognize, through her character Boston, similar trouble spots I have had in my own life that I have had trouble facing. I am anxious to learn how Boston solves them in Book 3.”

2. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I am dyslexic so it has taken me twenty years of hard work and discipline to master the English language on a professional level. Even after all this time, I still have to reread my writing several times to make sure that I have not placed words or phrases out of order in the sentence.

3. How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

Boston’s Quest is my second novel and by far my favorite.

4. When did you begin writing?

 In college

5. What is your favorite part of the writing process?

My favorite part of the writing process is placing my characters in dire circumstances and seeing how they get themselves out. I once heard it said that if there is no surprise for the writer, then there will be no surprise for the reader. I have found this to be true. Sometimes I think I know what a character will do before I start writing, but once I get in the middle of the story the character does something totally different and surprises me.
6. Describe your latest book in 4 words.

Fast-paced, intense, suspenseful, fun

7. Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your writing?

I love what Alisa H. said about this topic in her Amazon review so I’ll let her answer this question for me, “I love the intensity of this book (Boston’s Quest) … It ends with a cliffhanger, and I looked online and can't find any information for when the next book comes out... hopefully it's SOON!”

I am working on completing the Holoquest Fantasy series. Since Boston’s Quest is book 2 of it, I am writing book 3. This series is unusual because it will take 4 books to complete. Book 1, DiSemblance, is more of a prequel to the actual online, fantasy gaming plotline that comes about in books 2-4.

I am a professional writer with a bachelor's degree in creative writing and a minor in grammar. I have also attended several years of classes and workshops in screenplay writing at the Los Angeles Screenplay writer's Expo.

I love suspenseful, action-adventures and clean, young adult, romance stories. I was born and raised in a small town in Idaho. I am the second out of six children. When I was in my early 20's my mother was killed by a drunk driver. This one incident drastically changed my life. I have always had a passion for reading and writing fiction. Owing to a life long struggle with Dyslexia, early teachers discouraged me from pursuing a career in writing.

As I have spent over twenty-five years transforming my language disabilities into professional writing skills, God has honed my insatiable passion into an incredible vision.
