Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to
Grasp?
Nothing
is insurmountable, and as always, love conquers all.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your
writing?
I
found it to be difficult to tell this story in a way romance readers would
enjoy but also approach PTSD with the sensitivity and respect people who suffer
from the disorder deserve. This was my first time diving into such a sensitive
issue, so I focused heavily on my research about diagnosing and treating
post-traumatic stress disorder.
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I
have published five but written a few more than that. My favorite is always the
one I’m obsessing over at the moment. Once I write them, I move on to the next
favorite idea, but there is some component about each book that I love more
than others.
If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
Michael was designed after Jake Gyllenhal
in Jarheads. Even though he was in a different branch of the military, I could
see Jake in Michael throughout, or maybe I saw Michael in Jake…I don’t know.
I wrote this before Fifty came out as
a movie, but now, I would cast Eloise Mumford as Sarah. Her smile is exactly
what I pictured on Sarah the very first time I wrote about her in Finding Me, Finding You. With that
being said, she would really have to brush up on her southernisms to play
Sarah.
Jameson Charmichael was actually
written while staring at a Ralph Lauren ad. Seriously. I haven’t found the
perfect actor for him yet.
When did you begin writing?
A few years ago when some of my
co-workers tried to do NaNoWriMo.
How long did it take to complete your first book?
A
full year. Yikes.
Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I had friends inspire me more than one
particular author. I am so impressed with what people can do with words. You
can destroy or empower, and I have seen both.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Writing the first draft. Just
getting the story down is exciting because I never know what is going to happen
until it happens.
Describe your latest book in 4 words.
The
hero is sexy.
Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is
in the future for your writing?
A
series I have been writing was just picked up by a small publisher with big
ideas. I am so excited to be publishing this series of contemporary romance
books about the kind game changers ladies wish for.
Shealy James is a Georgia native who teaches middle school by day and disappears into the world of fiction at night.
