Is
There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?
If there is a message, or theme in my
book(s), it is that my characters, just as people do in real life, take on many
different personas, as circumstances demand. I include a famous quote from
Shakespeare, from 'As You Like It' at the beginning of LUST. MECHANICS. MINI
COOPER., that sums it up, that each person plays many parts in their lives,
some by choice, some by necessity. The
Hero of the book, Miles, has changed his life in an effort to escape an
unsavory past, but a past that helped him to survive a rough youth. Unfortunately,
in Book Two, his impulsive, risk-taking nature causes him to make choices that
are not necessarily in his best interests. Lesley, too, takes on a 'public'
persona, to mask her shyness, from the trauma of being harassed and ridiculed when
she was forced to attend a girl's boarding school in England. In Book Two, SEX.
COFFEE. TIME TRAVEL. she 'masquerades' as a young man in the past, as circumstances
demand that she do so (because it "works all the time in the books").
Another character, Jax, as an actor, changes because that is his work, but his
basic personality and character are fairly consistent through both books.
However, he does take a certain delight in anonymously torturing the paparazzi
who plague him constantly.
Is
there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Because of the strong personalities of
my characters, they sometimes decide to go off on their own pathways. This is
frustrating on one hand, but on the other hand it means they are taking me to
the truth of who and what they are. As they should. Sometimes they are the ones
who need to point out to me what is important.
How
many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I have completed two books, Book One is
LUST. MECHANICS. MINI COOPER.. Book Two, SEX. COFFEE. TIME TRAVEL the thrilling
conclusion to Book One is going live in September. I am also nearly finished
with another book, SABER AND STEELE: THE HALCYON VENGEANCE. It is full of
action and intrigue, with new characters, Sabinne (Saber) Darrieux and Adrian
James Steele.
If You
had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who would you pick and why?
Everyone has their own idea about how
the characters from a book manifest themselves in the reader's imagination. I
can't really say. After working in TV production I can say that I have great respect for Casting Directors and what
they go through in order to bring a production to life through their choices. They
have a difficult job to do. But I think
what really makes the casting for a character a success, is a great actor.
When
did you begin writing?
Writing began very early for me. I
wrote stories as a child. I was always writing, short stories, mostly. In
middle school, I wrote epic-length adventures with a friend. I was probably the
only person in any of my English classes that had no problem with writing
fiction. In college, at the first meeting of a freshman writing class, the
instructor told us that he expected 40 pages from each of us. There were groans
all around me. And that was for the semester.
I remembered thinking: what was the problem? My first story for the class ran
about 38 pages. As it happened, it turned out to be the first incarnation of
the story of Lesley and Miles.
How
long did it take to complete your first book?
This particular book had a very long
gestation period. I'm glad that it did, because it is informed by the person I
am now, with what I know now. It began as a dream I had when I was much
younger, and was an idea that always stayed with me. Of course over time many things have changed,
but these two people were always in my head, waiting to get out.
Did you
have an author who inspired you to become a writer?
I always loved the classic stories of Alexandre
Dumas and Rafael Sabatini, and Daniel Defoe. Adventure stories of any kind. The
Count of Monte Cristo is one of my all-time favorites.
What is
your favorite part of the writing process?
The pure joy and freedom of the
creative process, and the excitement wondering where the story is going to take
me.
Describe
your latest book in 4 words.
Saber and Steele would be: Spies.
Vegas. Seduction. Duct-tape.
Can you
share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your
writing?
I really love writing Saber and Steele, and there is the possibility that it might become
a series. Saber is a strong female character, but she struggles with
certain vulnerabilities. Steele is an intelligence agent, but very closed-in,
tight, controlled. He does what he does because he doesn't know how to do
anything else. He's in the trust and betrayal business and he is a master
player. And he doesn't really know who he is. There is something in Saber that
unlocks the desire inside of him to want
to be more, to be an open and honest human being. I have notes and plot-lines
for follow-up book.
Elle grew up in Los Angeles, California, but has lived in San Francisco and then Jamaica when she was a Peace Corps Volunteer. At the age of twelve she became obsessed with keeping falcons in the back yard. Fortunately, for the hundreds of hapless French poodles living in the San Fernando Valley at the time, she was not allowed to do this. In the course of the following years, she took on the challenges of earlier times, learning how to fence, how to ride horses, archery skills, and she even took a "Grand Tour of Europe". Travel continues to be a passion of hers. Her father always claimed that she had been born into the wrong century. He may have been right. Elle currently lives in the central highlands of Costa Rica with her dog Pixie, and her hedgehog, Quiller.
